Friede Goldman Newfoundland Ltd., has constructed on behalf of NTL, two escort and docking/firefighting tugs, the Placentia Pride and Placentia Hope. These purpose-built, state of the art 5600 horsepower tugs, measuring 38 meters long, are used to escort and assist crude oil tankers into and out of the terminal port. The tugs have a Voith Schneider tractor propulsion system, which allows the skillful maneuverability of the tugs in any direction. Should a shuttle tanker lose power or go off course, the tugs are designed to stop and redirect the tanker. Each tug is capable of effective emergency firefighting-shooting 13,000 gallons of water and/or foam every minute.
